Go Graphic for Expository Text
Component: Practice and Application
Grade Level: 3-10
Subject: All
Grouping Configuration: Individual, partners, small group or whole class
Time: 10-20 min
Materials: Graphic Organizers
Description: This strategy encourages organized thought process through the use of different graphic organizers that correspond to a variety of different text structures. These are used with expository text to help students organize their thoughts. The different graphic organizers mirror different text structures commonly used with expository text. (Images of graphic organizers included at bottom of page.)
Student Thought Process: These graphic organizers help students organize their thoughts in a way that makes it easier to visualize. They are able to better see the connections in the text that they may have missed before. It also gives them tools to use with different types of expository text.
Reflect/Extend: I would use this strategy anytime that we are using an expository text for all subjects. I think some of them would have to be adjusted depending on the grade. I would also include sentence stems for my ELL's to help with written language.
